Chicago Follows Suit And Bans Smoking

You can no longer smoke in any public area in Chicago, and must be at least 20 ft away from the entrance of a public establishment when smoking. Now, I don't smoke, but I'm still pissed. My cousin owns a pretty successful and trendy bar on Halsted and Armitage. The ban went into affect today, so i'll call him tomorrow and see how things went. Talk about violating your civil rights. It is your decision to smoke, and your decision to go to a place that allows smoking. YOu're not gonna get lung cancer from some dude walking down the street with a cigarette in his mouth. fucking politics. Too bad Philip Morris could care less, since it is already making a huge dent in the food industry by acquiring Kraft.

If the suburbs follow suit, I'll be even more pissed. Our two family establishments are gonna be hit hard, especially one that is a sports bar.

i agree, in florida they dont have that strict of a policy, but you can smoke in any place that serves food. period. you local bar that serves pretsles? well, pretsles are classified as food. no smoking.
I agree that alot of resturants should be smoke free, and the ones with the smoking section to have it in the back corner with good ventalation, and let the resturant owners choose if they want to go smoke fre or not. inforcing it upon them is wrong IMHO.

But yes i am a smoker, and i dont feel fully violated, but to say i can smoke OUTSIDE? gie me a break. why dont they make it illegal and stop all the bs laws and lawsuits.

New York passed a no smoking law in bars a few years ago. Business dropped drastically and a lot of bars closed butthose that survived are thriving again however all these bars have designed areas people can go smoke outside. If it's successful in Chicago I am sure the idiot law makers will get it up their ass to try that here. *sigh* I hate politics

Sorry Stav. I was the last hold-out keeping the anti-smoking special interest groups at bay in City Hall. They must've heard I quit back in september :(

I heard this one place has a "smoking bus" that makes its customers go into some old beat down bus in back to smoke

Look, ever since the Illinois Clean Indoor Air Act went live in '91, I've been trying to make a case that relegating smokers outdoors is cruel and unusual punishment. When that level of bitching proved ineffective, I made it a point of dropping my not-finished cigarettes in the crack beneath the door at the entrance of every establishment I needed to enter that wouldn't let me smoke inside and DID NOT PROVIDE A RECEPTICLE OUTSIDE. You don't want me to smoke in your establishment? Fine, then pay some sadsack to clean the butts out of the cracks in your sidewalk.

I support smokers right to smoke. Cause someday someone may go after a right I like and others do not. It is called respect.

they just passed a law like that in new jersey in 4 months you cannot smoke in any public places except in the casino's of atlantic city.

yeah, cause if they banned it in atlantic city casinos, the bodies of your aldermen would be found at the bottom of a river.

Lol, ain't that the truth :)

We've had this for a couple of years now. Bars thought they'd loose business. They're just as hopping now as they were before the ban. Oh and here you can't smoke in restaurants either. I love it.
