Thanks Poldano for that fantastic reply.
It can be concluded yes that the PLAYSTATION 3 has had a slow, but constant increase in sales over the 7 months since release in the US/Japan, and 2 months in Europe/Australia. Even though the product continues to sell at a constant rate, whilst the product is doing this it is acceptable to work on how to make the product more cost effective and more appealing to potential customers. It is rather unfortunate though that the amount of complementary products, such as games, and other devices have not been as forthcoming for the PLAYSTATION 3 than for Microsoft’s Xbox 360, or Nintendo Wii. We could say SONY this time was ahead of the game and ahead of the market once again, but this time they tried to over step competitors with a bigger stride than before. It can also be concluded that the poor production of Blue Ray movies could also contribute to the factor of slow sales for the PLAYSTATION 3. I feel if there were more Blue Ray movies available on the market this would be another contributing factor, and most definitely help SONY sell the PLAYSTATION 3.
Personally the Japanese ethos of SONY is one I love, compared to US/UK organisational culture there is no competition. In a Japanese organisation employees are pushed towards a Kazanatic approach to development of their work, and organisational activities. SONY as a company is one of continuous improvement, and this is why SONY as a corporate entity has become so powerful from the little electronics shops it which it once was. I think the baring of non Japanese nationals from applying for the CEO, CFO, and COO positions has held SONY back from being bigger that it currently is.
The success of the PLAYSTATION 3 will be under pinned by the development of new and improved production techniques to lower unit cost. It will be the Holiday season of 2007 that will be the turning point for the PLAYSTAION 3, but it is important to remember as the integration of HD Television enters the home, and the price of the PLAYSTATION 3 begins to fall the console will most definitely fly off the shelf. I agree with Poldano that the price of the PLAYSTATION 3 has been a psychological barrier for many fans, and gamers, but I assure the price is justified for what you are getting in the box. You are getting something that is at the pinnacle of technology, with the processing power of over 1,000 normal PC’s, and the next generation in media playback. Later on this year PLAYSTATION 3 owners will be given the most advanced online communal environment on the planet, with no subscription costs or fees. I just hope a gaming company decides to take a Blue Ray disc utilise the storage and make a game that uses the PLAYSTATION 3 to its full potential, which would then show gamer why SONY was right to build such a great console, at such high cost.
Poldano’s point about moving development of products from the hi-tech labour markets of Japan was a business decision, which was inevitable in an ever more competitive market place. It is unfortunate that SONY’s product quality has been hit because of this, but globalisation affects all major businesses, and SONY is not the only one. Now, we cannot brandish all SONY customer support staff with the same brush, many have won awards, and many have been fired for being poor, but intrinsically it could be said similar for many businesses.
There is no doubt that a SONY after Kutaragi will be very different place as the business will have a new CEO, but change takes a long time. Hopefully SONY’s continued focus on improvement and success will be at the forefront of any new CEO’s focus. I am afraid to say that SONY is here to stay, and even though there has been some problems in the past I see SONY turning a new corner over the next year with all divisions developing and changing. I feel SOE, which is currently number 1 in the MMO Market, continues to develop after the problems of SWG, and EQ2.
I hope you enjoyed what I said. Thanks for reading
