Playstation 4, 5, and 6 already in the works

You're in the minority, compared to those who have a PS2 as their only game console. PS2 sales beat the snot out of GameCube sales.

My point is that while SONY may have fumbled the PS3, it is well positioned to leapfrog the competition with the follow-on products. It isn't going away. BananaMan may be too much of a fanboi or flack for some of you, but reading all the flames is tedious when there are interesting technical and marketing aspects behind what he's saying..

I am among those who believe that SONY messed up on customer relations, in general and across several divisions. I also believe that that kind of record indicates a likely corporate culture problem. It is more interesting to ask whether the recent announced changes and the anticipated changes are likely to lead to better customer relations, implying both better products and better service, than to flame someone who cannot at this point be expected to voice a fully independent opinion.

Game console buyers will tend to buy the "best bang for the buck" product regardless of what the experience of previous customers of different products has been, so our collective experiences of being burned and/or disappointed by SONY gaming products is not going to seriously affect future market share. The vast majority of CD and DVD buyers are not even going to look at the recording company name, only the artists or titles. SONY is most at risk from the people who have had problems with mainstream SONY appliances, because these are commodity items with high name recognition and no distinguishing "content" to make up for bad previous experiences.

The truth with respect to commodity appliances is that repair is much more expensive than replacement most of the time, especially in the hidden cost of customer satisfaction. For those kinds of things, good customer service is no substitute for impeccable reliability. Moving manufacturing from its high-labor-cost but impeccable Japanese factories to lower-labor-cost but lackadaisical foreign factories cost SONY that kind of reliability, while it sought to milk its name mystique for higher prices for too long. That damage will take a long time to recover from. Game-product market share, in contrast, can be recovered overnight, relatively speaking. That market share is literally one good title away.

PS2 sales beat the snot out of GameCube sales.

Which is funny because the PS2 was the least powerful of the 3 consoles. This goes back to the gameplay/power debate.

Of course, the Gamecube also had shitty third party support.

Thanks Poldano for that fantastic reply.

It can be concluded yes that the PLAYSTATION 3 has had a slow, but constant increase in sales over the 7 months since release in the US/Japan, and 2 months in Europe/Australia. Even though the product continues to sell at a constant rate, whilst the product is doing this it is acceptable to work on how to make the product more cost effective and more appealing to potential customers. It is rather unfortunate though that the amount of complementary products, such as games, and other devices have not been as forthcoming for the PLAYSTATION 3 than for Microsoft’s Xbox 360, or Nintendo Wii. We could say SONY this time was ahead of the game and ahead of the market once again, but this time they tried to over step competitors with a bigger stride than before. It can also be concluded that the poor production of Blue Ray movies could also contribute to the factor of slow sales for the PLAYSTATION 3. I feel if there were more Blue Ray movies available on the market this would be another contributing factor, and most definitely help SONY sell the PLAYSTATION 3.

Personally the Japanese ethos of SONY is one I love, compared to US/UK organisational culture there is no competition. In a Japanese organisation employees are pushed towards a Kazanatic approach to development of their work, and organisational activities. SONY as a company is one of continuous improvement, and this is why SONY as a corporate entity has become so powerful from the little electronics shops it which it once was. I think the baring of non Japanese nationals from applying for the CEO, CFO, and COO positions has held SONY back from being bigger that it currently is.

The success of the PLAYSTATION 3 will be under pinned by the development of new and improved production techniques to lower unit cost. It will be the Holiday season of 2007 that will be the turning point for the PLAYSTAION 3, but it is important to remember as the integration of HD Television enters the home, and the price of the PLAYSTATION 3 begins to fall the console will most definitely fly off the shelf. I agree with Poldano that the price of the PLAYSTATION 3 has been a psychological barrier for many fans, and gamers, but I assure the price is justified for what you are getting in the box. You are getting something that is at the pinnacle of technology, with the processing power of over 1,000 normal PC’s, and the next generation in media playback. Later on this year PLAYSTATION 3 owners will be given the most advanced online communal environment on the planet, with no subscription costs or fees. I just hope a gaming company decides to take a Blue Ray disc utilise the storage and make a game that uses the PLAYSTATION 3 to its full potential, which would then show gamer why SONY was right to build such a great console, at such high cost.

Poldano’s point about moving development of products from the hi-tech labour markets of Japan was a business decision, which was inevitable in an ever more competitive market place. It is unfortunate that SONY’s product quality has been hit because of this, but globalisation affects all major businesses, and SONY is not the only one. Now, we cannot brandish all SONY customer support staff with the same brush, many have won awards, and many have been fired for being poor, but intrinsically it could be said similar for many businesses.

There is no doubt that a SONY after Kutaragi will be very different place as the business will have a new CEO, but change takes a long time. Hopefully SONY’s continued focus on improvement and success will be at the forefront of any new CEO’s focus. I am afraid to say that SONY is here to stay, and even though there has been some problems in the past I see SONY turning a new corner over the next year with all divisions developing and changing. I feel SOE, which is currently number 1 in the MMO Market, continues to develop after the problems of SWG, and EQ2.

I hope you enjoyed what I said. Thanks for reading

With the PS3 there is always talk of 'value for your money'; and like bananaman says you are getting so much power for your investment that will last you for years to come. There are so many promises of how amazing the games they can pull off on this in the future will be. But these all seem like empty promises to me. I can guarantee you that the big anticipated games like MGS4 and Final Fantasy are not going to feature anything that couldn't be done on 360 or PC. Beyond that you just have to take SONY's word for it, because I haven't seen anything announced yet that truly seems like a huge technological leap over 360.

And the argument that the $600 is justified because of the immense power contained in this system is flawed. That argument could only hold if that power is actually being used. And I personally don't see that it is at all. The current game lineup pretty much sucks balls, and there's barely anything worthwhile on the cards until christmas at the earliest.

SONY made a huge mistake thinking that raw power would win this generation. They didn't have the power advantage before when they dominated (PS1 and PS2 were both way inferior to N64 and Gamecube power wise but that didn't stop them from winning hands down) Now this generation the roles have reversed. Wii has a way inferior system but superior software lineup and we have seen the results of that.

all the low blows to gamecube :( I loved my gamecube. And thats why I love my Wii it;s completely backwards compatible with gamecube, and with the virtual console i've combined 6 videogame systems into the size of 3 dvd cases yay!

why do you keep writing sony and playstation 3 in all caps? it is pretty annoying. also i dont quite agree with a couple of things but i cant be arsed to find them now

I thought I'd write it like Press Release, and hippo don't talk like you make it sound like its sony's fault there aren't any games, somy has given out an un precedented amount of Dev kits, and help numerous workshops with developers around the world.

Well lets put it like this the 360 operates at 0.9 TFlop the PS3 is at 2.1 TFlop

All I know is i will take a personal satisfaction from now on if I can convince ppl around me to stop any SONY related product being purchased.

Hakan when you have a coherent argument then come back.

There's not much you can do right now. PS3 is doing really bad compared to the other systems. And people notice it because they go to the local electronics store and see the pile of PS3s as soon as you enter.

There won't be nothing backing your words until those so waited games come out.

Like Mr. Hakan says, there is no ammunition for this ultimate weapon yet. ;)

But what ammunition? Most of what is out for PS3 is already out for other consoles and they have already lost exclusivity to Ace Combat and Devil May cry. Rumor has it that Square is bringing FF1 to 360 and possibly FFXIII will be multi platform (which the original creator is pushing for because of the market value in the US and Europe), but square so far will neither confirm nor deny it.

Well if thats true the lawyers will have a field day.

the system itself isnt bad the planning that went into it is .... "gee who would have tohught that devs of games wouldnt want to break from the industry standard format of the last two decades and embrace a new tech in the ps3 that to the untrained player will give little effect to their gaming experience " :p

is ps3 terrible no is it doomed no but will it be the industry leader in this round of the console wars no it wont ... no big deal like someone ( i think poldano ) says these console wars ebb and flow ..todays champ is tomorrows chump .... really the only great thing is to watch banana sit here and try to tell everyone that the ps3 would beat god 1v1 and tbh i actually think he believes it too :p

Well then your lawyers don't know their own contract or Sony doesn't have the grasp you think they do, but it looks like they are considering it.

Final Fantasy XIII and Dragon Quest IX for PS3 and Xbox 360 announced. Square-Enix President Yoichi Wada confirms that the next final fantasy title will be multi-platform.
Yahoo! Finance is reporting that the next games in the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series are now official announced for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Straight from the president of Square-Enix, Yochi Wada .
Up untill now, most of the titles in the series were usually exclusive to Sony's console, but now it seems that it might change in this generation of consoles.
Source.
Update: Seems that we posted a mistranslation. According to IGN's translation Wada's words were "We plan on solidifying our plans by E3 to offer both on the PS3 and Xbox 360, or place both on just one [system]," which indicate Square-Enix is considering the possibility to offer the titles on both the X360 and PS3.
We are sorry for this mistake. We try to serve the news as hot as they get.
The bold portion the more relevant of the news.

There are other titles who are still only on PS3. So that leans me toward getting a PS3. The main two are MGS4 and FFXIII. However, there are others which are still only under PS3 line up. ;)
