When will MMO companies start listening?

Curse

Bored to death... maybe...
There has to be some company out there developing a game that's off the beaten path!! I'm sick of these fanatasy type games! I want more sci fi - ish or maybe old western type settings with a new combat and class system. I'm sick and tired of mmo companies that reinvent the wheel just to make big bucks under a game that is a copy of every other mmo out there but in a different setting. Games like Cov/CoH were a breath of fresh air with the graphics and character customization but it lacks depth and the combat system is basically what every other mmo has. Though I'm not asking for an MMO with the NGE as the combat system I'm asking for an MMO that is revolutionary in combat and theme. Something that strives to make players socialize but not force them to group up and kill mob "X" and then have arguments over who gets the ONE "fabled" item it drops.

I'm looking for an mmo with more of what the original SWG had. No grouping necessary but having to depend on a player economy and other players for buffs, etc. WoW might have a lot of people but I heard the game is very simple and if thats true then all the mmos are gonna use WoW as a template for success and the mmo community will get dumbed down severely.

Anyway just a thought while I wait for Kotor 2 to finish reinstalling. :P

WoW is nothing like the original SWG, so boring EndGame and the PvP is just another grind... EQ2 is probably the closest you'll get to SWG.

Maybe Age of Conan will be good, you never know, only time will tell.

Devs need to realize there are 2 different MMO categories, maybe even 3 with massive number of far eastern players.

There is a Western MMO coming out, it is called Phoenix.
[/b]
Cold is correct. :)

http://phoenix.another.org/ - the site is very new, but the project has been going since September. We're a group of indy developers looking to produce a game we'd want to play ourselves. We're more than willing to listen to the community for things they'd like to see. In fact, we encourage suggestions and comments.

Sounds pretty intresting. I read your FAQ, do you have any plans for the combat system yet? How good are the graphics? Also will you be implementing some sort of system that makes players depend on eachother? If you played SWG I'm talking about things like players needing to go see an entertainer to heal their battle fatigue and also crafters needing components that a different crafter makes. (Like architects needing tailor components to make merchant tents.) /miss architect

Try EVE, that's different.
Saga of Ryzom, is pretty close to what SWG used to be. But is fantasy type.

There are several plans on the drawing table for both PvE and PvP based combat, outlaw gangs, and posses.

The goal of the game is to require players to depend on each other. Each profession will compliment another in some way. Not too many people prospered in the old west alone, Phoenix will have similar aspects.

We're using the Torque Shader Engine client-side, which has support for DirectX 9/OpenGL 2.0 and pixel shaders 2.0. For the non-techincal, that means we'll be able to pull of some very nice eye-candy on next-generation video cards, while still providing backward compatibility for older cards.

I played SWG from beta up until just before the CU. When SOE took away my Master Creature Handler and my pets, I was done. I only recently came back to the game to check it out, but I'll likely leave again. It's just not the same anymore, nor will it be.

I don't want to clutter the boards here with information about a game outside the scope of this site's genre and wear our my welcome. :) Feel free to post your comments and questions over on the Phoenix forums.

Your game sounds awesome so far. I'm surprised you guys aren't some part of a big wig company. Anyway thanks for taking the time to post here. I'll head over to your site and check the fourms out.
