I just finished it, am curious if anyone else is reading it?
:thrawn:
[/b]

Well, its been a while since I last read the rest of the Thrawn stuff, but made enough sense in his context to not piss me off. The "oh, the prequels came out since I wrote that old shit" references were far more irritating. The Neimodians weren't used very well in my opinion. Not that I'm big fans of theirs or anything, they just seemed a little out of place somehow. After all these years though its like madlib book outlines, so many hands in the pot from different media sources. I'm sure the irritants will fade with time.

his endings always always annoy me.
He adores Thrawn as a character, that's fun to read..., but his female characters are ( from a woman's point of view) a bit weak.

The admiral annoyed me at first, but kinda came around towards the end. I know, not the strongest appearance but at least its an insight into Chiss society. Ferasi annoyed the hell out of me though :/

yep
she did
and I am not actually certain what purpose she served as a character other than to serve as an idealistic thrawn fangirl.

He didn't bother me, I always enjoy hearing him speak but whyt I didn't see in difference to the jedi.net boards discussion was a great difference in character, I didn't get the feel that he was younger, less seasoned and less hard, making mistakes. Zanh almost always, to my mind, "kisses" Thrawn with a touch of almost omnipotent intelligence. and a dreadful vague smugness sometimes.

Am also trying to figure out what purpose having Obi wan and anakin in the story either. It was a readable story and I enjoyed it, especially as you say tha insite into the chiss world, and their language all five sentances of it... but I wish there was some more.

and what about his brother??????

This is the guy who created the Mystrils and Mara Jade....his female characters are many things, but weak is not a word I'd use...am I missing something?

maybe it's just me, but I never liked Mara Jade and that was only reinforced by Survivor's Quest.

I haven't read Outbound Flight yet (I always wait to pick em up in paperback) but I really enjoyed all of Zahns work up to now.

The lukewarm reception Outbound Flight is getting here kinda surprises me a little.

Mara Jade isn't my favorite character at all really, its just that shes one of the stronger female characters in the entire EU...I was just surprised that you felt Zahn characterized his females as weak.

I really enjoyed Survivors Quest, so I was pretty excited about Outbound Flight...now I'm kinda wondering... <_<

There are lots of things about Survivor's Quest I didn't much care for, somehow.
Back to the matter at hand though. Thrawn's omnipotence comes from his study of other cultures art... or so we're led to believe. Who are we to judge alien intelligences? Maybe he's got all that shit figured out backwards and forwards :) He's a smug fucker cause he's good at what he does.

Ani and Obi were an afterthought really. Just another annoying "reference" used in the service of setting C'Baoth and Jinzler in the story (again). I *did* like the throwaway reference to the DNA blooddraw that C'Baoth just shrugs off.

Ya know what doesn't quite jive though? Carefully reread the description of D-1's bridge in Survivor's Quest. Something just ain't right with the end of Outbound Flight in that sense. The SQ references smell more like a fight before the crash than just a cooperative crash as layed out in OF. Something ain't right, maybe its just my memory.

And how about Car'das as a noob?

Don't get me wrong OBF is a good book, Zahn has a nice way with words and I enjoy his writing. This one is worth reading for a number of reasons.

well I don't question this at all but I would love to know more about Chiss society in general, my point was more that what i had read frmo another board discussion led to me to expect that Thrawn was immature and less ...jeeze words fail me...brilliant, yet upon reading I find that this is actually not the case, he's brilliant. ( very sherlock holmes...which makes sense as he is sort of based on that character.)

sneaky yep I will have to read it again though I tend to read very fast and miss things sometimes.

I liked Car'das actually even though he was a bit annoying sometimes. He sort of played the Pellion role, the foil of Thrawn's thoughts. Because Zahn never allows us to see what that man thinks we need someone who can interperate that for us. ( sherlock holmes)

I should prolly go back and re read SQ again, what annoyed me aboutthe book was the way it sort of slid into a star wars mystery of the month style story and I just on principle cannot handle Luke and mara. I guess I just find most stuff to do with the 'light siders' or rebs or how ever you wanna put it sort of saccarine.
