Hi all! So it sounds like I am moving to Lexington Kentucky!! If anyone is familiar with that area, any chance you can give me some tips? I really dont know much about it at all lol Whats the weather like? Are there many big bugs? (living in a cold climate I have been fairly spoiled when it comes to insects, but for the man eating spiders that like Ackis) Do they have an accent? (the Kentuckians, not the bugs :P) etc etc Any help you can give this poor untravelled Canadian would be greatly appreciated! thanks much

ps Ackis is still a noob <3

Don't go, but if you have to, don't go outside.

Ok now Im getting pissed off...I have started a reply 3 times now, but I keep hitting the back button on my stupid mouse and lose it all sigh...

Anyhow, Ackis, sometime in the next 3-6 months, its pretty vague I know, but there is a lot to do in the meantime. Hubby is moving his software company down there, they do software for vet clinics, and will have to find office space, do all the corporate stuff, hire more staff, find a house, get visas, etc etc, since we are not immigrating, just moving for a few years. What a gong show it will be to move all of our stuff there too sigh.

Lexington right now is our top choice, lots of housing available, and cheap too compared to Calgary, 200k per house cheaper on average. So hopefully we can do that :)

Do they have accents there? Will we stick out like sore thumbs talking in the grocery store? lol

OMG 10 more posts and will hit 300!!! I never thought it would happen :)

Well I haven't been out that way in a while but best I can remember the weather is kinda nice out there. A little humid but overall nice. Can get rather warm in the summer and cold in the winter though. There are plenty of bugs there. They like the warm weather..........you are likely to run across all manner of spiders, scorpions, snakes, beetles, lots of grasshoppers and your fair share of locusts (they are cool though you can catch em and they make this loud hissing noise.......scares the hell out of people. When they molt they leave a nice intact hard shell hanging on stuff that you can pick up and play with).

They don't won't have an accent..........you will. You are the outsider.

Travel tips. Buy shorts and sunscreen. Watch out for plants that have leaves of 3 and be careful when you pick anything up outside. If it is dark and cool under it you are likely to find black widows hanging on. Brown Recluse spiders will get in your house and always nice to jsut check andythign that has stayed in the same spot for very long (i.e. shoes in the closet and such). If you live next to a field get some mice traps as you will need them.

And yeah, expect major accents! Be sure to stop in at the local KFC and see if the Colonel Sanders is in. ;)

Lets see a Brown Recluse is probably better known as a Fiddle Back Spider. They have an extremely painful bite that will cause necrosis in the skin around the area that will slough away leaving roughly a quarter dollar size hole. Thier bite can also have other side effects depending on whether or not you are allergic to the bite. They make the black widow spider look like a harmless garden spider. They like to get into your bed and such at night and wen you roll over on em tey bite (or atleast that is the only place I have ever seen em. Just shake your sheets out well and they will fall off and hide elsewhere).

There is also another cool spider down here. It is an Orb Weaver. It grows fairly large and is black with yellow markings. They weave a cool looking web that has a band running down the middle of it that is criss-crossed. They will get on your porch and pretty uch anywhere else that they can get to to get good amounts of food. You can't miss them thier leg span is enormous and they typically sit motionless with thier back 2 legs bunched togather and thier front 2 legs bunched togather (on either side giving the impression that they have 4 thick legs). Look for em out there and take some picture. Definately cool looking........just don't get super close to em. They don't bite unless seriously provoked (destroying thier web or poking on them) and generally keep the bug population low on your porches and stuff.

Brown Reculse Spider from the University of Kentucky's own site. :)

Be careful, those fuckers are dangerous. Are you going to live near the campus or out in the horse lands?

Oh, here's your welcome brochure: Lexington, KY

Heh....good luck to you. You're gonna need it.
