Was he of the age where hiding the fact from your folks that he himself smoked might have been a mitigating factor in the discovery?

no he was , I think 5 or six and it was a new package which we all watched him open.
none of my parent's children smoke, although my folks did. My mother quit and my dad died. ( not at the same time)
