Hellish day today

Artica

Imperial Kitten
We are missing about 3/4s of drivers, janitors (all janitors didn't come today), all people that work in the cafeteria and reception (we have a security guard in reception instead of the normal staff), and half of the people that work in the press room. Yeah... all of those hispanics and like 3 chinese (they are not illegal, just supporting the cause). :(
My bosses are really pissed cause, the paper will go out late because of the missing labor. Oh yeah and the people on call to replace those people are also hispanics. Is a mess, and the stress is starting to flow.
This is going to be a hard day. :(

Yeah, I guess to get out of work for a day, I could support a cause too *cough*.

Janitors...no problem, let the trash build up and give them something to come back to. They want to leave work and protest, fine, but the place better be spotless when you get back.

Editors and writers...no problem, there's still a deadline to meet and part of their job is to meet deadlines. If they can't meet the deadline, then find someone who can. Welcome to the real work force.

My company doesn't care who you are or what you do. If your job doesn't get done when they ask for it, you're fired. Doesn't matter if you're out protesting or not.....deadlines are deadlines.

Writers have to be in the protests to write about it, Photographers too :P

I don't know what they will do to them. But at this moment Timi, there is no one available to cover that position. And thus creating a problem. And that's exactly what Hispanics want to make a point in. Without those people in their jobs, we can't function normally.

So Timi, in this case, they win. Even if they get fired, which some of those wont or at least wont til they find replacements.

Actually they don't really win anything. I could easily walk out and claim "A day without a 27 year old". Sure they job won't get done, they'll be a little backed up, but they can fire me, eventually find someone to replace me and after some time it's like it never happened.

For every person that walks out, I bet I could find a college grad struggling to just get their foot in the door, or someone who already has experience and is trying to find a job but they can't. Point being, people are expendible. Yeah, it may sting in the short term, but in the long term it won't mean jack.

*For reference, I work in an office of 15 people, so one person walking out is the equivilant of 3-4 people walking out.

Yep.

But ultimately, they make their point accross, which is what they are aiming for.
[/b]

Actually their point is backfiring. I (and others) are seeing this protest as carried out completely with the wrong message. I originally thought it was for immigrant's rights...but it is not. It is for illegal immigrants to keep their jobs and way of life without having to be part of the system. Sorry...this is certainly getting the wrong type of attention from democrats and republicans alike.

Yeah, it's about illegals, which is a shame. Most of the hispanic community are taking the day off because they know/think they can get away with it today.

I just think it's funny how people are protesting for the rights of the people that are trespassing.

I just told someone in my office about this (who happens to be Hispanic) and he's very upset that he could have not come in today. lol

Doesn't really matter what job it is, if there's work available, there's at least 20 other people just waiting to take their job. At least where I live anyway.

I personally don't agree with the illegals doing this, they have no right. However, I think the bill is a little extreme. So I'm kind of in a neutral status on that. However I did my part by not buying anything from Americans today and not going to work. And sorry Artica... I'll see ya tomorrow at work ;)

My girlfriend didn't agree on many of the things her people are doing today. She disagreed on the waving of the Mexican flag, the singing of the national anthem in Spanish, and the job walkout to prove a point. She has a flex-time work schedule at her job, so she went to the rally for an hour or two in the morning, and then went back to work.

At our restaurant, on the other hand, I don't think any of the Hispanics took off work. And if they did, they won't find their job waiting for them tomorrow. Not cause they're Hispanic, but because everyone is under the "no call, no show" policy at all times.

I agree with your GF Stav. This is not an issue with Mexicans, this is an issue with the illegal immigrants. But then again, what can I do? They didn't listened to me when I gave my opinion on several of their meetings.

I agree with your resturaunts policy Stav. They decide to take the day off work for some protest then yeah I would of canned em in a heartbeat........would have gone something similar to below:

"Attention.........Everyone listen up. I know there are protests going on monday about illegal aliens and I am telling you that if you decide to take the day off and go then clean out your desks or whatever immediately and go home. IF you don't understand what I mean then let me put it real simple for ya..........you don't come to work monday you had better have a doctors note saying you were at home, deathly ill or consider yourself fired..........this goes for everyone!!!"

Then I would stick to it.

Epise, you sound too agressive. Stav's better, plain and simple. However, there are jobs, where replacements are hard to get. Like Press People for example. Those are Engineers for the most part.

Exact-mother-fucking-ly.

This ain't about Mexicans/Cubans/Hispanics/whatever. This has to do with a serious hole in this countries secruity and economy, and honestly, it is about bloody time something was done about it.

Folks know that I am about as anti-Bush as they get, but I also care a LOT about the safety of this country, and honestly the border situation and illegal immigration handling from BOTH borders is completely unacceptable right now.

Long term, employing the unemployeed and ahving them pay taxes that they wouldn't have been or illegal immigrants don't pay is going to make the economy better...as for security reasons...those should be pretty obvious.
