Yeah, it was cancelled in 2002 as it was about to go from alpha to beta. Here's the last post ever made regarding this MMO:

06?10?2002 - I wanted to give everyone an update about the Dune Generations MMORPG. there has been nary a peep from the dev team since announcing the postponement of the beta test. here is that last update that was received.

"25 th February 2002 :: Beta Test Delayed
As you probably already know, Dune Generations has gone alpha since last November. This means that about a hundred players have been testing the game in order to improve it, in preparation for the beta.

Unlike most of the actual online games, Dune Generations offers a truly persistent world; even when you disconnect, the game goes on. This results in a great complexity and implies that a lot of adjustments are necessary before we open the game for a real beta.

The alpha is now coming to an end. The test has allowed us to identify many aspects of the game that still need work. One example is the interfaces, which many players have found to be hard to understand and to use. Redoing these interfaces will require several weeks; therefore, we have decided to delay the opening of the beta until this problem is fixed, in order to provide beta testers with interfaces that are closer to the ones we will use in the final version.

However, we will need more testers for the last phase of the alpha. Some of the players who have registered to become beta testers will receive an invitation to join the alpha in the coming weeks.

Many thanks to all of you for your patience and support!"

? Here is the last newsletter that the Dune Generations team sent out...

"Hello,
We are pleased to inform you that the brand new Dune Generations website will be online as of Wednesday February 06, 2002. Completely redesigned, it will include new sections:

- a detailed description of the game
- new screenshots
- new artwork
- links to community sites and the Dune Universe

The forum is of course still available so you can express yourself and talk with the other visitors.

Development:

Dune Generations was initially announced for the end of 2001. Since then, the interest aroused by our game has allowed us to establish new alliances with important partners who will be in charge of the publication and operation of Dune Generations.

Given these new opportunities, we decided to postpone the launching of Dune Generations: our goal is to achieve a game of such high quality that it will become the standard in its field. Dune Generations is currently undergoing what we call "closed alpha" testing, that is, very limited access. We will not proceed from alpha to beta testing before meeting a certain number of specific criteria (both in terms of game functionality and server stability and load).

Similarly, the game's commercial launch date will depend on the results of the beta test phase. For the moment, this date is not exactly fixed, and probably won't occur before the second quarter of 2002.

Beta test :

Access to the beta test will be progressively enlarged to external testers starting in February 2002. The first beta testers chosen among those who apply will be notified and will receive their access key by email. The different elements of the game will be tested step by step. Once the tested part is operational, new functions will be implemented and the number of testers will increase. The beta test will thus develop progressively so nothing is left to chance.

See you soon on the new Dune Generations site.

The Cryonetworks team."

? Since then there has been no communications from the dev team about the progress of the Dune MMORPG via email, the site or the forums snce then. I'll keep news posted here about it if there are any changes. [/b]

So what is this just nostalgia or did they dust it and pull it off the shelf?

Twilight War was also cancelled, but it looks like a few games could be coming out similar in design in the next few years. That sucked since I was anticipating it.

Are you kidding me ? Dune fuckin rules! If there's such a thing as classic SF, it's Dune.

Okay I agree they are classic Sci-Fi but put me too sleep just like the Lord of the rings (oh,boy get flame retardant bodysuit on)

Personally I think i'd rather read dianetics than dune :P

Careful, L. Ron Hubbard actually wrote sci-fi before he spun out Dianetics :P "Battlefield Earth" (yeah, what that awful John Travolta movie's based on).

the Dune books are amazing to read... the movies do not do them justice at all. I read battlefield earth and you know what I don't remember it AT all.... but Dune amazing.... Frank Herbert created such a vivid world with such amazing depth. It is a book ( or series of books) I can read over and over again.

I read Lord of the Rings when I was 13, around 50 times and since then have just not been able to re read them. That too is an amzing world, rich, detailed etc....
