Flash Gordon

SCI FI Channel has greenlit production on "Flash Gordon," based on the popular comic strip franchise, it was announced today at the Television Critic's Association tour. Production on the 22 one-hour episodes begins in Canada in early 2007. The series, produced by Reunion Pictures, is slated to debut on SCI FI in July of '07, with a broadcast syndication window to follow.

Under an agreement with property owner King Features Syndicate, the new series is being produced by RHI's Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr., who previously produced SCI FI's popular miniseries event "Legend of Earthsea."

Ming, Dale Arden, and Dr. Hans Zarkov are among the many beloved characters returning to television in this contemporary retelling of the intergalactic exploits of "Flash Gordon." Stellar adventures and heroic battles mark this inventive new take on the perennial science fiction classic. The "Flash Gordon" comic strip was created in 1934 by legendary comic-strip artist Alex Raymond and is still distributed internationally today by King Features Syndicate.

I wonder if they will take off of, or be inspired by the truly classic film of the same name:

Oh, weird note about SciFi channel, according to my friend who is one of their web masters, he claims Eureka is their biggest hit (highest ratings), who would have thunk that.

Eureka doesn't actually suck. Its not an "invest your time to understand what's going on" kind of series like BSG or SG-1 though. Apples and oranges really, comparing those from a fan's perspective. Ratings are what generate the revenue though. Meh.

Yeah, he said the number one thing keeping BSG from being a HUGE cable hit is the name of the show. I'm not a fan of it (that's cause it is WAY too soap opera-ish for me), but I know lots of sci-fi geeks are, they just can't touch the mainstream market at all cause it is named after a campy 70/80s TV show.

Oh, the Lost Room was pretty cool.

I'm not a huge fan of Sci-fi series... 'cause in my opinion they look quite cheesy. They lack immersion. I have seen a couple of one series name andromeda (or something like that). I do prefer to read a book than bearing the poor acting of some of them. ^_^

That stands true for any TV show for me. Being a film buff and grad I just cant stand TV. I can count on maybe 1 hand the shows I can stomach without crying foul on acting or technical aspects...

Married w/ Children (Ill be watching this till I die. Doesnt matter how many times I watch this the pure perfection that Ed O'neil brings to Al Bundy is unrivaled by any other comedic sit-com actor hands down in the past 20 years IMO.)

South Park

The Daily Show (At times Ill watch Colbert but I cant get past the fact that they are doing it solely because of the success of TDS and although Colbert is a riot he is like a half a can short of the perfect six-pack that Jon Stewart sports.)

Sopranos (Sadly IMO its peak was season 1 and 2 after that its kinda started going downhill but was still enjoyable. Although Tony's character is superb the other characters have great flesh-outs and help bolster the overall appeal of the show.)

FX had a series last year called "Thief" that I enjoyed but again it rested on the shoulders of one actor IMO which was the lead. FX puts out some stellar one hour shows but I just couldnt get into "The Shield" probably because I didnt catch it from the start. The grainy documentary camera stlye is nice but at times feels forced and over the top. "Dirt" has drawn me in now since I havent been able to game much these past two weeks due to waiting on a computer but its not the whole show that gets me. The story line for the Schizo Photographer is what caught me. Sadly on Tuesdays Ill have to watch "Dirt" now just to see how his character gets handled down the road.

Sorry for the ramble needed something to do while I sucked down my morning coffee. Heres hoping the new Star Wars TV show is good but I dunno... the last three movies where tripe IMO so Im not holding my breath.

Understandable rant. I watch mostly Japanese Animation, they usually got more quality. Mainly because is the vision of one person and each episode made like a film. Compared to a series where the main actor/actress can change details when they want... they are like babies sometimes. And then sometimes they act poorly and the viewer loses immersion. That's why I say, I prefer to read a book about it than viewing a cheesy show.

BSG jumped the shark when they moved to that stupid planet that got occupied by the Cylons.

Just my opinion.

It had many Brit actors, including a younger Timothy Dalton before James Bond.

Was it Flash Gordon and the Defenders of the Universe?
With Mandrake the magician and Phantom. :D You could get toys of Ming and others too.
