Internet Connection

So I was just using the computer and all of a sudden it locked up big time. Anyway when I restarted, I could'nt connect to the internet. My Local Area Connection is down and I cannot get onto the internet (it says a network cable is unplugged but everything is fine). However, it says my wireless connection is connected and running, yet I cannot connect.

I'm on the laptop with a wireless connection and its working... Other computer cannot conect either, it says the LAC is down. I don't know much about networking and the such but is there a way that I can tell my computer to use the Connected Wireless connection to connect instead of the LAC? Other than that I am completely lost and Have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Okay, so your wireless one is working but your ethernet cable ones aren't?

Go to your router (assuming you have one) and check for something like "Attached Devices" and make sure your computers are listed there (and only your computers, if there's extra someone could be jacking your wireless connection). Also check some other settings to make sure nothing has been changed.

Make sure the internet connection light is on on your router. Also, if you get the internet from a serperate connection on your laptop than on the rest of your network the service could be temorarily down that supplies the rest of your network.

For connecting it wirelessly, you need to have a wireless network adapter on your other computer, so that could be out of the question. If you do though, and it's installed, you can just use it's driver software er whatever to connect to the wireless connection (usually they put the settings for the device in the task tray of windows at the bottom right corner.)

You may also want to scan for viruses or spyware.

I won't claim to be an expert on networks, but there's at least some advice, hope it helps.

Wireless seems to be working, laptop is on it now. For some reason it is connected on my main computer but I cant acess the internet with it. I was wondering if I could somehow switch to it.

2 of the computers do not have a connection via the LAC, but one of them does, go figuire...
Funny you say that, Just scanned my computer yesterday for visuses ect and it came up fine.

Maybe the router is just in a funk, or hub, or whatever you use, have you tried resetting the router/LAC?

YEa, ive disconnected it and the such. Thing is I had no idea how to set it up in the first place so I had a friend help set it up. No clue how this stuff works..would have helped if i knew. :/

Im trying to compare the settings of the laptop to the computer atm... not worried about the other stuff as long as I can use the wireless.

When I get in a jam like that I check out http://www.computing.net, and then if I can't find an answer I ask a question (obviously people get angry if you don't search for an answer first since it could already be there and it can take a little extra effort to try to troubleshoot the same problems again). But anyway, try computing.net.

I don't know so much about networks myself, unfortunately. I've had weird things happen but I don't think that has.

Oh yeah, and check to make sure you haven't hit any buttons on the LAC by accident that would change any settings like that. Heh.

Well I got to go to bed so goodluck. Night.

well the fact that you are able to connect via the wireless in your laptop tells me the internet is fine and your router is working as well (as far as I can tell from your description) Do you have a different network cable? you can try that if you do. Something simple to check is there a blinking green or amber light where your network cable plugs into the PC also make sure that the network card in your computer is fuctioning normaly, not disabled or anything like that. Let me know how it turns out i have a bunch more things you can try but a couple easyones to start :)

Hmmm the link tells us your pc is atleast talking to the router, and your card is working yet you cannot get to the internet. If you haven't already turn off windows firewall (assuming you have XP). by going to start|control panel double click firewall select turn off and click ok (you can turn it back on later) see if you can hit the internet.

Already tried without the firewall. :(

okay lets see if your network card is set for DHCP. click start|run then in the box type cmd a dos prompt opens and when you see the blinking cursor type ipconfig /all you should see numbers. specifically an ip address, a subnet, and default gateway there should be a sequence of numbers in that such as 192.x.x.x or 168.x.x.x it will also say if dhcp is enabled. DHCP should be enabled. If it is type ipconfig /renew just to see if yur router is communicating properly.

If it isn't enabled, click start|control panel double click network settings. right click on local area connection and click properties. Click on internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties click the radio button obtain ip address automatically and Obtain DNS address automatically.

lets see what comes of that :)
