ROFL

Ok, any of you folks into Arcade games at all?

MAME is Multi Arcade Machine Emulator
www.mame.net

It basically uses your comp to emulate the processor and logic board of an arcade machine....then using actual arcade roms that have been dumped, you can play the actual arcade games at home.

Take it one step further, put your comp inside a full blown arcade machine, connect to the authentic arcade controls, and you have a MAME cab, or, an arcade machine that plays 4000 arcade games.

Its awesome anyway....too bad theres no other enthusiasts here, but if anyone is interested in learning more, I'll help where I can.

A good resource is www.byoac.com

ohhh, like a primitive version of multiverse
[/b]

Actually, if this is the multiverse you are referring to (which is the only one I am familiar with):
http://www.multiverse.net/about/index.jsp?cid=6&scid=0
then no, MAME is actually nothing like multiverse.

I had also heard about about multi-console emulator called multiverse (at least thats what I think it went by) but it didn't do arcade, and it did 1/2 the consoles quite poorly. (actually that one was called MESS, nm)

The only think MAME can't emulate effectively atm is the Sega Model 3 (which runs amongst others the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game).

There is a seperate emu project for that.

yeah, thats the multiverse i was talking about. ah, ok, so its like a ROM emulator sortof thing, like ZNES

Exactly my friend.
Except MAME itself is just the hardware emulator, the roms never come with mame (for copyright reasons).
And it does Arcade, not console.

TBH, I'm kinda surprised no one has chimed in here as being a MAME fan, although I guess I'm prolly a little older than most here, and maybe the games it emulates doesn't hold the same interest for some of the younger crowd (many of the games are from early arcade, though it does do the newer stuff like Area 51 and shit.)

hey, i just downloaded a MAME emu for my psp...what are some good roms to download? i have blitz and some capcom and cruisin usa games..i just cant remember the gi used to play in arcades...

Man there are tons of cool games, but I'm not sure what games you're into...

Gotta be careful of the newest games, cause aside from the roms, they use chd (Compressed Hard Drive) files which require large files to be stored on HDD to run (I think Cruisin USA is one of em, rom wont work w/o the CHD file)

What kinda games you like?
Fighters, shooters, side scrollers?

Some links you might find useful:

A database of games emulated by MAME:
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/

A wicked site to help you remember some of those arcade classics:
http://www.klov.com/

Gimmie an idea of what kinda games you like and maybe I can recommend a few.

What version of MAME you running?

I'm a huge emulator fan. I've 4k mame roms. I'm going to build a cabinet soon. Here is a place where you can get the parts and do it yourself for cheap:

http://www.arcadedepot.com/

I also have a 1982 vector SW arcade in my garage that I'm working on.

Hey Ruler, can you post where you got the PSP emu?!

I got all the mame roms from a website that got closed for 10 bucks, 4 dvds worth. If someone has ftp space I'll upload them there for any emuholics out there.

Hey Popi:

Not sure what version of mame you're running, but a cool site for Roms if you ever need em is:
http://www.pleasuredome.org.uk/mameftpgrou...dex.php?torrent

my MAME emu wont work for my psp :( keeps saying im missing files..but you shouldnt need extra files for the psp ver...just the eboot.php and roms...

That depends...

Does the emulator start at all?
Do you get the missing files message when you try to run a Rom?

yea it starts..i can get to the rom selector but when it tries to load keeps saying im missing files..

and my gba or atari 2600 emu wont work either

but at least my nes one does :)

Ok, first make sure that all your rom files are in the ROM folder in mame...the program looks for it there by default.

The Roms should be in .zip format, do not unzip them, they will play from the zip archive.

Some roms (though not many) require a sample file. This is because the game used digitzed sound samples that were handled seperately from the original rom chip, so you need those files.
As I said, not many games require samples.

Most likely, you're trying to play one of the newer games like cruisin usa which requires the CHD files (look at my posts earlier in the thread where I talk about this)

If thats the case, those games will not play without the .chd files, and you cant fit a chd file on your PSP.

What version MAME are you running, should be a client number like 0.61 or 1.04 or something like that.
