For example: Partition 1 is Vista. Partition 2 is Linux. Can i transfer all my necessary files to the Linux partition, uninstall Vista, reinstall XP, and transfer the files back to XP?

From what I remember no. You need to get a seperate drive with fat32 and transfer your files to it that way when you log into linux assuming it sees the drive you can grab the files. I know that linux cant access ntfs.
Thats why when I have dual booted systems with linux during the partition creation I create an extra partition with fat32 for file storage and transfer.
There is a program I use to access all the files on the system without the password but I dont know if it will work with Linux since it was mainly designed for windows. Its called winpe here is one that I have never tried http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/863576/H...E_WinPE_DSL_ISO http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=winpe (I dont know what that UBCD is so dont mess with that one) these are torrents.

Simple answer yes.

Boot into linux, mount the NTFS partition and have fun copying files over. I've mounted NTFS images in linux without issue before, just need to use the -t ntfs flag.

However, re-installing windows may screw up the boot loader and stuff... I can't recall the process on how to do that.

Ah sweet thanks Ackis, I tried in the past but always messed it up.
As far as the boot loader it depends on what one hes using. I think as long as he doesnt delete the vista partition an just reformats it and reinstall xp he should be okay, but man Its been a long time since I had to work with this stuff so I could be wrong.

not that it matters any more. I installed Alcohol 120% on Vista and the Blue Screen of Death made its appearance. Whenever I would start Vista, it would go blue screen and then restart, even in safe mode. Just reinstalled XP after an hour. unfortunately I have to re-organize my MP3 collection and re-download whatever was lost.
