There's always going to be flames in a political forum. It's the nature of the beast. Someone will always consider something a flame. Best bet is to place a note on the forum saying it's not a fucking moderated SWG forum and to stop being whiny bitches and reporting people. There are much better ways of taking care of people who can't argue without flaming than moderation.

I think it's possible to avoid flaming in political forums. Difficult, but not impossible.

I use the rule of thumb that if I cannot type without spraining my fingers with the force of my keystrokes, I'm probably flaming rather than engaged in appropriate discussion and debate. I get up and walk around, and after I can actually stand sitting in a chair for 15 seconds without jumping up and bashing the first wall I see, I work on a reply.

Then comes the really difficult part, which is editing the reply to make sure the sarcasm is appropriately constrained. Elimination would be preferable, but constraint is usually all I can manage.

I use another rule of thumb for debate, which is that if someone's statements make me really, really angry, there are almost certainly some aspects of my own opinions that are not well-grounded in fact and reason. Ripping apart my own opinions, while difficult, is very useful practice for ripping apart someone else's.
